WHAT’S GOING ON WITH SAT/ACT TESTING IN CALIFORNIA?
Good question! Even after most testing has actively resumed across the country, there have continuous
last-minute test date/site cancellations in California, our area in particular. If there is not
confirmation that our local sites will be a go on your student’s anticipated test date, we’re
advising students to consider Reno or other out-of-area cities that have not been subject to
cancellations (that information is available online). The other possibility is that
YOUR STUDENT’S SCHOOL will contract with College Board and/or ACT to conduct the tests on their
campus - many area schools have done that in the last year. Check with your Counseling Office/College
Counselor.
ARE SAT/ACT TESTS STILL NECESSARY, RECOMMENDED, WORTH IT?
Here’s the scoop…students applying to UC’s or CSU’s in California only may skip the tests. HOWEVER, if they are applying to certain CA private colleges, or most out-of-state public and private colleges, we advise that you check each schools’ admissions policy first. If they state “test optional”, or require test scores, TAKE THE TESTS! Good test scores often have an impact on admissions and scholarship consideration, so the investment in time and test prep may be well worth it.
SCHOLARS’ TEST PREP
In addition to tutoring our own SAT/ACT students, our tutors are also test prep teachers, having been hired to conduct many SAT and ACT classes at local high schools for more than a decade. When asked if we guarantee good scores, our response is that no one can or should make that guarantee. We do, however, cite our vast experience, resulting high test scores earned by hundreds of our test prep students over the years, and continual referrals by school reps and other SAT/ACT clients.
1:1 Test Prep: Through this individualized test prep, we identify and target each student’s weak areas - whether subject content, comprehension, strategy, pacing, or test anxiety.
Small-Group Classes: Upon request, we are able to customize SAT or ACT Prep classes for groups of up to 4 students. These 16-hour classes include test overview, strategy, subjects, pacing and practice drills. Students also receive some 1:1 consultation on their individual test performances.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF 8thGRADE STUDENTS!
Will your student be applying to attend ST. FRANCIS, CHRISTIAN BROTHERS, or JESUIT High School?
The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is required as part of the application process to area Catholic high schools. Acceptance and placement levels are based in part on HSPT test scores.
Admissions Offices assess applicants’ knowledge in the following HSPT subjects:
VERBAL, QUANTITATIVE, READING, LANGUAGE, MATHEMATICS, WRITING
Because we have worked directly with the Catholic school admissions, we are most familiar with the process and the HSPT. OTHER TEST PREP
SCHOOL QUIZZES AND EXAMS:
Many parents tell us that their child “doesn’t test well”. And, many students experience mild to severe
test anxiety when facing quizzes and tests. We have great success with our specialized tutoring process
through which students are trained to become more relaxed and focused in test settings and soon start
to achieve higher grades.
OTHER STANDARDIZED TESTS:
There are many other standardized tests in schools and for application to schools and programs.
We have experience in tutoring many of these tests. Please give us a call to inquire about the testing in
which you may need tutoring.
